Situated in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, Old Milton is surrounded by some of Scotland’s most breath-taking lochs. Whether you are looking for the perfect picnic spot for your family, a great walk with friends or a spot of water-skiing, here are 5 of the best lochs to visit in the Cairngorms.
Loch an Eilein
Loch an Eilein (loch of the island), which houses a stunning 13th century island castle, was voted Britain’s best picnic spot and provides some of the best low-level walking in Scotland. Sheltered by ancient pine trees with views of the mountains, the path round the loch is part of the 50km Rothiemurchus way marked network of paths and is one of our favourite picnic spots at Old Milton.
Loch Einich
Located just west of the summit of Braeriach, Loch Einich is one for the adventurous type, providing challenging cycle routes with stunning views of the loch and the surrounding mountains. Well worth a visit with your mountain bike in tow.
Loch Alvie
Just 3 miles from Aviemore, Loch Alvie is another favourite of ours. The beautiful parish church for Alvie overlooks the loch, which is also home to brown trout and pike for fishing enthusiasts.
Loch Morlich
Loch Morlich is one of the most beautiful settings in Scotland. The loch is surrounded by forests while also home to long stretches of sandy beaches, with the stunning backdrop of the peaks of the northern Cairngorms. A great spot to visit in the summer months with sailing, windsurfing, paddle barding and many other water sports available on the loch.
Loch Insh
Just 10 minutes from Old Milton, loch Insh offers something for everyone. There are a wide variety of water sports available throughout the summer months including kayaking, sailing and paddle boarding, while the dry ski slope is open during the winter months. The loch is surrounded by 14 acres of woodlands, perfect for mountain biking and hiking too.
